Wall Colmonoy Installs a High-Temperature Vacuum Furnace
at Los Lunas, New Mexico Facility

(August 31, 2011, Madison Heights, MI) – Wall Colmonoy announced today it has installed a Centorr Workhorse® Vacuum Brazing Furnace at the Los Lunas, New Mexico facility. The new furnace, customized for Wall Colmonoy’s specific needs, is able to process material under high-vacuum and partial pressures with excellent process control.  The furnace’s Yokogawa Process Control System with an HMI interface will help technicians maintain effective operation and control of the furnace as well as provide data with which to make operational decisions. It has an effective Hot Zone size of 12” X 12” X 12”, an operating range of 10-6 torr – 1 atm, and a maximum temperature of 1315° C (2400°F).  The model includes a Varian VHS – 6 diffusion pumping system, Leybold rotary vane roughing pump and a water cooled diffusion pump baffle allowing for processing of materials at very low vacuum levels.  The unit also includes digital water flow switches and dedicated load thermocouples.

Brazing parts and components for the aerospace, automotive, defense and energy industries where  braze quality is critical to the longevity, safety and efficient function of jet engines, turbine blades, missiles, heat exchangers and nuclear reactor components outside the core, Wall Colmonoy’s experienced engineers and technicians will use the new vacuum furnace to continually test braze quality.

Mike Weinstein, metallurgical engineer and Technical Service Manager at the Los Lunas plant, indicates “The new high-temperature vacuum furnace, with its inert gas cooling system, is expected to increase throughput by a factor of two. Used for product development, application development and research testing, this increased capacity will allow us to keep pace with the requirements of our growing business.”

Wall Colmonoy Announces Modern Furnace Brazing School
October 18 - 20, 2011 at Aerobraze Engineered Technologies

Preserving the tradition originated by the late Robert Peaslee, a brazing pioneer who invented the first nickel-base brazing filler metal, Wall Colmonoy offers another session of Modern Furnace Brazing School on October 18 – 20 at Aerobraze Engineered Technologies’ Brazing Engineering Center. At this state-of-the-art facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, engineers, technicians, quality managers and others will experience “hands-on” applications and learn about brazing technology from leading industry experts.

This three-day seminar offers knowledge and practical application about:

  • Brazing School May 2011 Photos 015.jpgBrazing Design
  • Metallurgical Aspects of a Brazing Operation
  • Brazing Atmosphere and Furnace Equipment
  • Brazing Material Selection and Applications
  • Quality Control

Unlike other classroom-only seminars, Brazing School attendees will tour the facility and see the actual brazing application on the shop floor.  They will also have the opportunity to apply different forms of filler metal to Wall Colmonoy supplied samples, have them vacuum brazed and discuss the outcomes. Attendees are encouraged to bring brazing issues, parts/components to the seminar where they will be provided expert advice regarding their brazing difficulties or concerns.

Wall Colmonoy’s Brazing Experts, with a combined 48 years of experience providing practical solutions to brazing challenges, have the technical know-how to guide attendees through the brazing process from beginning to end production.  The Modern Furnace Brazing School instructors are:

  • Lydia Lee, BSE, M. Eng, MBA, Director of Brazing Engineering
  • Bob Pfouts, BSME, Engineer, Aerobraze Division
  • Russ Wilcox, BME, MBA, Marketing Applications Engineer, Alloy Products Group
